Move your body - Get unstuck
What’s your workout routine like these days? Nonexistent? Repetitve and uninspired? If you know me in real life, you know that I am a workout app junkie. After years of gyms and studios, I have switched to working out of my house. I love it because it saves me time and gives fantastic flexibility. I have tried it all, no really…I have! And I am here to share my favorite at-home workouts.
But before you read this list and run to sign up for a free trial, I invite you to set an intention for what you want to achieve. Are you trying to get in shape? Are you looking for a moving meditation type workout? Are you a fitness junkie looking for a new inspiring workout? Are you looking for a workout to compensate for unhealthy eating habits? Let this intention setting motivate you and look at these workouts through the lens of your goal. If your goal made you cringe, let’s talk!
Barre3 - I have been a fan of Barre workouts since 2008 when I first walked into The Bar Method Marina neighborhood studio in San Francisco. I have since tried several versions of this pilates/ballet-inspired workout and Barre3 is by far my favorite. I was a member of a studio for almost 2 years, but since moving to our new house, I do online workouts 3-5 times a week. I love that you can quickly select 10-60 minutes, type of workout (cardio, prenatal, interval), and pick your instructor. My favorite is Christa Joy.
Glo - This is my go-to yoga app. It offers month-long programs to follow and individual classes. They have Hatha, Vinyasa, Kundalini, restorative, and meditation practice. I love the experience of picking a class based on your mood and daily needs. My favorite instructor is Jason Crandell. He was my yoga teacher in San Francisco, a beautiful human and inspiring teacher.
Beachbody on Demand - If you are a workout junkie, chances are you are familiar with Insanity, P90X, 21 Day Fix, or any of their other programs. I love the weights program LIIFT4 and their kickboxing classes. But please be careful! If you read my story, you know about my burnout and fight with adrenal fatigue. If you feel sleepy or overly hungry after the workout, you know you overdid it. Your body is telling you that it’s too much.
Peloton - I was in spin classes at 39 weeks pregnant with my son, so you could consider me an aficionado. We got the Peloton bike 3 years ago, and I go through periods of 3-4 workouts a week to 6-month breaks. My favorite instructor is Ally Lov. I find her personality and enthusiasm contagious.
The Class - I may have saved the best for last. This is my new obsession! This is the first workout that has me seriously considering becoming a certified instructor. Go watch their promotional videos and give them the free trial test drive. I currently have no words to describe this magic. TRY THIS AND REPORT BACK!
As I mentioned above, please listen to your body and honor it. Our bodies are currently under a lot of external stress, and I know mine is struggling to produce cortisol with every news tidbit that I come across. As a result, my adrenals are suffering. My solution is to keep my workouts at 30 minutes with low weights, and moderate cardio. I press pause more often and stop 2/3 in if my body feels done. I am taking this time to examine my relationship with working out.
I hope I inspired you to try something new and to keep your workouts intentional. Please reach out if you need an accountability partner, or would like more advice.
